How to talk with your child about her first period

Talking about the menstrual cycle can be a daunting and uncomfortable situation for many parents. Thankfully, there are resources that can help make the explanation of this important event go smoothly and comfortably.

The Care and the Keeping of You

One of these tools is a book called "The Care & Keeping of You" authored by Valorie Schaefer and illustrated by Josee Masse. This book covers everything about taking care of your body from top to bottom. It includes topics which cover washing your hands, cleaning your face, hair care, etc. It even touches upon nutrition and exercise. I also appreciate how the book helps young girls to know what they are going through is completely normal and is all part of taking care of yourself as you get older.

Another concern many parents have is regarding the topic of sex that is usually involved with the period talk. This book is suitable for preteens and doesn't bring up sex like other puberty books. They can read the book at their own pace and you won't need to be concerned about them discovering something they may not be ready for.

Along with explaining the biological process, which is of course important…it also mentions how to take care of the situation by going over tampons, pads, and how to be prepared for that monthly visitor.

There is no need to fear! This book will help you get the courage to have that important talk. I highly recommend you check it out and then give it to your daughters so they have something to reference as they grow.
